After months off, the first heating cycles of fall burn off the dust that settled on the burners and heat exchanger all summer. That produces a distinct hot-dust smell for a cycle or two, and it alarms a lot of homeowners every October. It is normal, and it fades on its own.
Everything else deserves a closer sniff. Smells have causes, and the causes range from a dirty filter to a gas leak. Here is how to sort them.

The harmless one: dust burn-off
A dusty, slightly burning smell during the first few cycles of the heating season is just accumulated dust cooking off hot metal. It should fade within a few heating cycles as the surfaces clean themselves. If it lingers for days, the system may need a cleaning, but the smell itself is not dangerous. Opening a window for ventilation while it clears is fine.
Musty or stale smells
A musty odor when the heat runs often traces to the filter or the ductwork rather than the furnace itself. A filter that went too long between changes grows musty, and so do ducts with dust buildup or moisture issues. Replace the filter first. If the mustiness persists, the ducts may need inspection: our duct inspection and sealing service finds the moisture and buildup behind persistent odors. Homes with very dry or very damp air can also benefit from humidity control.
Burning plastic or electrical smells
A sharp acrid smell like hot plastic or burning wire is not normal. It can mean an overheating motor, melting wire insulation, or a foreign object, like a plastic bag or a child's toy, that found its way against hot components. Turn the furnace off at its switch and call a technician. Do not keep running it to see if the smell goes away; overheating electrical parts get worse, not better.
Gas smell: leave first, ask questions later
Natural gas is odorless, so utilities add a rotten-egg smell you cannot miss. If you smell it near the furnace, do not turn anything on or off, do not use your phone inside, and do not try to find the leak. Leave the house and call your gas utility from outside. Only after the utility clears the home should you call a heating technician. This is the one smell where speed matters more than diagnosis.
Describe the odor when you call. We will tell you whether it can wait or needs a visit now.
When in doubt, shut it down
If a smell worries you and you cannot identify it, turn the furnace off and call. A technician would rather find dust than find a problem you ran for another week. Regular furnace maintenance prevents most odor causes in the first place: clean burners do not smell, fresh filters do not go musty, and inspected electrical stays cool.
Frequently asked questions
How long should the dust burn-off smell last?
Usually just the first few heating cycles of the season. If it is still strong after several days of regular running, the system likely needs a cleaning, and a tune-up is the right next step.
What if the dusty smell comes back every time the furnace runs?
Then it is not seasonal dust. A persistently dirty smell points to a very dirty system, a filter that needs changing, or dust and debris inside the ducts. It is a maintenance issue, not an emergency, but do not ignore it all winter.
I smell gas near my furnace. What exactly should I do?
Leave the house immediately without touching switches or using your phone inside. Call your gas utility from outside. Do not re-enter until the utility says it is safe. Call a heating technician only after the all-clear.
Why does my heat smell musty?
Mustiness usually comes from the filter or ductwork: an overdue filter, dust buildup in the ducts, or moisture getting in somewhere. Change the filter first, and if the smell stays, have the ducts inspected.
Is a burning smell ever an emergency?
Yes, when it smells like burning plastic, rubber, or electrical wire. That indicates overheating components. Shut the furnace off at its switch and call a technician rather than running it to see what happens.
