Signs Your Blower Motor Is Failing

Blowers rarely die without warning. Listen and feel for these.

๐Ÿ’จ

Weak air from the vents

When the blower slows, every room feels it, especially the ones farthest from the furnace.

๐Ÿ”‡

The blower won't start

A furnace that fires up but blows nothing usually has a dead motor or a failed capacitor.

๐Ÿ”Š

Screeching or grinding

Worn bearings scream before they seize. Catch it early and the fix is simpler.

๐Ÿ”

It runs but never stops

A blower stuck on high points to a failed relay or control board.

๐Ÿ”ฅ

Burning smell from the vents

An overheating motor smells like hot dust or melting insulation. Shut the system down and call.

โšก

Breaker trips when heat runs

A dying motor draws too much current and trips the breaker again and again.

Diagnosis first

How We Fix Blower Problems

Weak airflow has several causes. We test, find the failed part, and fix that, not everything around it.

  • โœ“
    Full electrical test

We test the motor, capacitor, and control board to find the actual failed part, not just the symptom.

  • โœ“
    Capacitor and relay replacement

Weak capacitors and stuck relays are simple fixes that save good motors. We check them first.

  • โœ“
    Motor replacement when needed

If the motor itself is done, we fit the correct replacement, matched to your furnace's specs.

  • โœ“
    Blower wheel cleaning

A caked wheel moves half the air. We clean it so the motor is not fighting dirt.

  • โœ“
    Control board diagnosis

When the motor gets no signal, the board gets tested and repaired or replaced.

  • โœ“
    Airflow verified

After the fix, we check airflow at the registers so the repair proves itself.

Quick answers

Blower Motor Questions

What we get asked about furnace blowers.

Why is my furnace running but no air comes out?

The blower motor, its capacitor, or the control board has failed. The furnace can fire its burners all day. Without the blower, that heat never leaves the cabinet.

What does a bad capacitor do?

The capacitor gives the motor its starting push. A weak one means slow starts, humming, or a motor that will not start at all. It is a common and straightforward fix.

Can a blower motor be repaired, or does it need replacing?

We replace failed capacitors, relays, and controls whenever that solves it. If the motor windings or bearings are shot, replacement is the fix. A patch would not last.

Why does my blower screech on startup?

Usually dry or worn bearings. It starts loud and may quiet down as it warms, but it only gets worse. A seized bearing can take the motor with it.

Should the blower run all the time?

It should not need to. If your blower never shuts off, a control is stuck calling for fan. We trace the signal and fix the part that is holding it on.
